Advent: Love, the Greatest of These

Love. What is it?
For a language (English) that is so descriptive…we sort of limit ourselves with this one word..
A child says to his daddy, "I love you," to turn around 30 minutes later and yell, "I don't like you!" when candy is refused.
A teen boy confesses his all consuming love to his date, to break up after a couple of months.
"I love chocolate."
"I just looove your new hair style!"
"I love my country."
We mostly use the word "love" as a feeling… a good feeling… and mostly a fleeting feeling. An emotion of warmth and snuggles.
But love in the Biblical sense (and I'm not talking about intercourse) is a verb… it is action.

Do you think the Samaritan felt all gooey inside when he helped the beaten man? He probably felt frustrated, angry, and pity, but what he DID was LOVE.
Do you think Jesus hanging on the cross was all starry-eyed for the women witnessing his death? He probably felt anguish, suffering, wishing he was dead and the pain was gone, and probably some aggravation with his disciples and his God, but what he DID was LOVE.
Mike frequently would tell volunteers, "if you think of Nicaraguans as your brothers and sisters…if you love them…then you would not - could not - leave them in poverty."
Love is action. We are called to love…to give…to help…to be with people.
If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates their brother (or sister) they are a liar; for the one who does not love their brother (or sister) whom they have seen cannot love God whom they have not seen.*

El amor. ¿En qué consiste?
Para un idioma (el inglés) que es tan descriptivo... en cierto modo nos limitamos con esta única palabra...
Un niño le dice a su padre: "Te quiero", para darse la vuelta 30 minutos después y gritar: "¡Me caes mal!" cuando le niega un caramelo.
Un adolescente confiesa a su novia su amor incondicional, para romper con ella después de un par de meses.
"Amo el chocolate".
"¡Amo tu nuevo peinado!"
"Amo a mi país".
Solemos usar la palabra "amor" como un sentimiento... un buen sentimiento... un sentimiento fugaz. Una emoción de calidez y abrazos.
Pero en la Biblia el amor es un verbo... es acción.
¿Crees que el samaritano se sintió bien cuando ayudó al hombre golpeado? Probablemente sintió frustración, rabia y lástima, pero lo que HIZO fue AMAR.
¿Piensas que Jesús colgado en la cruz se sintió feliz por las mujeres que presenciaban su muerte? Probablemente sintió angustia, sufrimiento, deseó estar muerto y que el dolor desapareciera, y probablemente algún disgusto con sus discípulos y su Dios, pero lo que HIZO fue AMAR.
Mike decía con frecuencia a los voluntarios: "si piensan en los nicaragüenses como tus hermanos y hermanas... si los amas... entonces no los dejarias -no podrías dejarlos- en la pobreza".
El amor es acción. Estamos llamados a amar... a dar... a ayudar... a estar con la gente.
Si alguien dice: "Amo a Dios", y odia a su hermano (o hermana), es un mentiroso; porque el que no ama a su hermano (o hermana), a quien ha visto, no puede amar a Dios, a quien no ha visto.
